ANO MILIA A historic village on the Pierian Mountains at a height of 1000m set in a rich pine forest with fir and beech trees. Ano Milia, mother city of Mesea and Kato Milia, was first inhabited in the 17th century. After the Battle of Milia (2nd April 1822) it was destroyed by the Turks.
It was rebuilt and then continued to be inhabited until December 12th 1943, when it was set fire to by the Germans.
Today there are 50 new houses here and a refuge operated by the Climbing Association of Katerini (E.O.S), which is open all year round and has accommodation for 60 people. You can visit the church of Agia Paraskevi with its fine church tower and peal of bells, the ruins of the cemetery of Ag. Athanasios, as well as the ruins of the tower of the legendary freedom fighting family, Lazaion.
It is also worth paying a visit to the historic site of the miraculous "Iron Cross", which according to tradition was placed there by Kosmas Etolos in the fork of a pine tree which can still be seen there today. It is also worth taking a stroll along the cool "Footpath of Love" and enjoying the beautiful wild flowers and animals.
From here you can continue along the European Mountain Trail E4 to the summit of Pieria. The climbers refuge has the only restaurant in the region, where you can find wild boar cooked according to local recipes.
Situated 25 km from Katerini with easy access from the main road from Katerini to Elassona (junction in Kato Milia). The road is not made up for the 5 kms from Mesea Milia.
