THE WETLANDS OF NEI PORI
The wetlands of Nei Pori lie to the North of the River Pinios Delta. It is a region of great ecological value and diversity.
Over 600 species of tree and plant life have been found here, which can be divided into five main categories: trees, bushes, reeds, plants which thrive on sand and other vegetation, mainly wild flowers.
However, the most significant living creatures in this area are the migratory birds, as this is one of their largest stopping points in Greece after that of Eastern Ipeiros. 225 species of fowl have been recorded.
There are some significant heron, wader and tern colonies in the area, such as the Little Bittern, the Night Heron, the Little Egret, the Glossy Ibis, the Spoonbill, the Levant Sparrowhawk, the Avocet, the Little Tern and the Calandra Lark. Many wading birds have been observed during migration, including the Curlew Sandpiper, the Black-tailed Godwit and the Spotted Redshank. The Slender-billed Curlew (the third most important area in Greece) and the Mediterranean Gull have also been observed.
There has been a decline in the number of wintering birds, though the Pygmy Cormorant, the Dalmatian Pelican, the White-tailed Eagle and the Spotted Eagle can still be seen. The raptors from neighbouring Olympus are also to be found. There are 37 known varieties of fish with possibly a further 11 species existing. Reptiles make up the remainder of the wildlife.
