TRADITIONAL OCCUPATIONS
In the rural areas of Pieria you will find some of the traditional occupations such as cattle breeding, charcoal burning, tree felling, shepherding and other activities.
You will also find smallholders cultivating their land and growing produce for the market (tobacco, olives, etc.), beekeepers taking honey from their hives, dairy products such as milk and cheese and the rearing of game.
In the urban areas you will find other traditional trades and crafts such as chandlery, jewellery, building, fishing, asbestos production, carriage, hairdressing, painting and sculpting, as well as tailoring, baking and so on.
Craftsmen look after the old buildings and the paved roads and cobbled streets, notably in the traditional villages such as Elatochori, Paleos Panteleimonas and Litochoro.
TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS-COSTUMES
A wide variety of traditional musical instruments can be admired, principally at the dances arranged by the various cultural groups of Pieria. Many of the villages have been settled by communities displaced from their original homes during one or other of the Balkan upheavals, and the villagers have tended to stick together.
They have maintained their cultural identity through organisations and clubs, most of which have their own premises in Katerini where they meet for dancing and music and social activities.
Characteristic musical instruments of the region are the bagpipes, the Pontian Lyre, the flute, the clarinet, the violin, the drum, the accordion, the tambourine, the bouzouki and the guitar.
All the cultural associations have their own costumes, which they wear on special occasions such as Parades and National Holidays. These costumes contain a strong tradition of folk art, and are to be found in all the groups.
ICONOGRAPHY
The traditional art of Iconography (religious painting in the Byzantine style) is practised by skilled artists with their own studios, principally in the town of Katerini. Their art is to be found in all the Churches of the County as well as in homes, workshops and exhibitions. No Greek household is complete without its shrine and dedicated icons.
The "KARAPIPEREIOS SCHOOL" of Byzantine Art of Constantine Xenopoulos is of particular note. Here students learn the art of painting Church Interiors in the traditions of the Orthodox Faith.

The noted cultural and educational centre of Kato Milia, Pieria, "I LAZEI" has recently restored the old primary school of Kato Milia. Here traditional crafts are continued such as the manufacture of farm implements, household appliances, baking equipment, combs, traditional costumes, cloth weaving, the manufacture of traditional furniture and much else besides.
The Pontian Organisation of Pieria opened a museum dedicated to its culture in 1990. It contains some 600 objects of community, artistic and historical interest. These objects have been gathered from their homelands, far and wide. The museum is housed in a private building 200 m. from the centre of Katerini, behind the Town Park.
The Municipality of Kolindros has two centres of traditional art, that of "Nikolaos Lousis" in Kolindros and the cultural centre "The Rodani", in Riakia.
In the Municipality of Korinos there is the Pontian Association of New Trapezounda, "Alexandros Ipsilandis".
In the Municipality of Pieria the Folk art centre of Elatochori concentrates on objects in daily use, (tools, appliances, costumes etc.) and this is to be found in a gallery in the town hall of Elatochori.
Folklore and dance groups are to be found throughout the county.
