MUNICIPALITY OF PETRA

Seat of the Municipality: Milia
Municipal Districts: Agios Dimitrios, Lofos, Milia, Moshohori, Fotina

The Municipality of Petra was formed by joining together the districts of Moschohori, Lofos where the settlement of Rachi belongs, Milia where the settlements of Kato Milia, Mesea Milia, Ano Milia and Karyes belong, Fotina where the settlements of Petra or Lokovi, Morna or Skotina and Fteri belong, and Agios Demetrius.

The municipal authorities are based in Kato Milia. According to the last census the population of Petra Municipality is 6.230 people. Most municipal settlements are built amphitheatrically at the foot of Pieria Mountain.

The municipality’s name Petra (stone) comes from the homonymous old city (fortress) that was built at the south-eastern side of a big rock in the Petra Straights below the Karakoli location and near the Itamos (Agioneri) stream, where it dominated the mountain passage opened by Xerxes in order for the Persian troops to pass from Macedonia to Thessaly.

The massifs of Pieria Mountain, Titaros Mountain and the steep slopes of Olympus Mountain up to the Voulgara ridge are the main natural features of Petra Municipality. Their highest peaks are Flampouro (2.192 m), Thoma Rachi (2.016 m), Samari (1.904 m) and Pente Pyrgi (1.710 m).

The region’s forests make up a natural earthy paradise available for all sorts of contemporary tourism. Through the roads and paths that cross the mountainous region the visitor has the opportunity to savour the beauty of a unique natural environment that is home to flora and fauna of exceptional diversity.

The Municipality of Petra combines unique natural beauty with important archaeological and historical monuments.

These include the traditional settlement of Morna in the Municipal District of Fotina, the archaeological sites of Spathes Agiou Dimitriou, Vrontismeni between Moschohori and Kato Milia, Adrianos Lofou, Palioderveno Lofou, Karakoli Fotinon and the historical monuments of Pyrgi Lazeon at Ano Milia, the Holy Church of the Assumption and the Cemetery Church of Saint Lazarus in Moschohori, the Holy Church of the Assumption at Palioziaziako Lofos, the holy Church of Saint George in Mesea Milia, the Holy Church of Saint Paraskevi and Saint Athanassios in Ano Milia, the Holy Church of Saint Demetrius and the Holy Church of Saint Athanassios in Karyes.

Near the church of Saint Paraskevi in Ano Milia one can see the iron cross that Saint Kosmas Etolos hammered in a pine-tree on his way to the Olympus villages.

The road from Fotina up to the traditional settlement of Morna is gravelled and passes through beautiful wooded slopes.

Few kilometres after the Morna settlement we meet the irrigation dam of Skotina whose artificial lake forms a remarkable biotope and fishing spot.

It is worth visiting:
