Municipal Districts : Eginio, Katahas
The Municipality of Eginio, with a population of approximately 5.100 people consists of two municipal districts, Eginio (municipality capital) and Katachas. It also includes the Megali Gefyra settlement.
The municipality is located between the cities of Thessaloniki and Katerini at a distance of 35 km from both, next to the national highway. The railway line and the old national highway which cross the municipality boundaries, provide additional access alternatives.
The Eginio Commercial Fair, (among the oldest fairs in the country), has been a top-ranking economic and social event in the wider region, for the last 78 years. It is organised on a yearly basis from the 12th until the 18th of September, in a specially designed space of approximately 40.000 sq. meters with commercial stands and it attracts large numbers of exhibitors and visitors from all over Greece.
Eginio is a town of rich historical heritage. There are important Byzantine monuments such as the Saint Athanassios Holy Church with 16th century murals, which has been characterized as a scheduled monument, the Holy Church of Apostles Peter and Paul dating from the 14th century and the Holy Church of Saint George of Megali Gefyra which exists since 1537, while the marble plate that covers the altar dates from 1.014.
The region’s cultural heritage is preserved by the Demeter, Aristotle and Eastern Romylia Culture Clubs that keep alive customs such as Koulouma, the Ascension Celebration with the traditional kourbani, the Pontian gathering, Cultural August etc.
It is worth visiting:
> In M.D. of Eginio: the Church of the Apostles Petros and Pavlos (14th century), the Church of Agios Athanasios (16th century), the Church of Agios Georgios (with beautiful scenery, picnic tables and a children's playground), the Church of Agios Georgios (1537) in Megali Gefira, as well as the pine grove of "Xapeftos" (with a panoramic view and gathering places).
> In M.D. of Katahas: "Pefkonas" (a grove with picnic tables, athletic and recreational facilities, a basketball court, a children's playground and a pottery workshop.
> The wetland of the delta of Aliakmonas, Galikos and Axios rivers, part of which is located in the municipal districts.
