ECONOMICAL ACTIVITIES
Agriculture - cattle breeding
A significant number of the population of the Prefecture of Pieria are involved in the primitive section. The mild climate with its low temperature fluctuations, which prevails in the plains of the Prefecture, its rich water potential, as well as the significant percentage of land that can be cultivated (38.1% of the total size of the Prefecture) favour the cultivation of agricultural products.
There is grain (34% of the total vegetable production of the Prefecture), tobacco, corn, rice, potatoes, tomatoes, cotton, sugar beet, strawberries, watermelons, melons, and orchards and vineyards producing grapes and olives. Many fruit bearing trees also thrive such as kiwi trees, peach trees, apple trees, cherry trees, plum trees, as well as chestnut trees, hazel trees, walnut trees and almond trees. The pastures cover 17.5% of the total area of the Prefecture (256 thousand hectares).
The cattle bred are goats, sheep, pigs, oxen, rabbits, chickens and other kinds of poultry. There are also some specific units which breed wild pigs and ostriches. Important quantities of milk and meat are produced from cattle breeding.
Fishing
Approximately 400 people are involved in the fishing industry. The coastline, which extends over more than 70 Kilometers, is a basin into which the rich internal waters (rivers, streams) flow. This gives the area an important advantage for the dynamic development of fishing. The large natural beds of shellfish in the area of Nea Agathoupoli and Bay of Methoni are an important element in this. Water cultivation in the area has developed significantly. Many units of mussel cultivation are located in an area of more than 600 hectares. This represents 60% of the total Greek production, a large part of this being exported.
Light Industry
The most important light industrial activities, which represent the secondary section of the economy of Pieria, are: Motor vehicle repair, Food products, Wood and Metal products, The Footwear, Cclothing and Textile industry. An important part is also played by the drinks industry, weaving, printing, publications and other similar activities. Leather and fur, rubber and plastic, paper products, security systems, cattle feed, etc. are other local industries.
Tourism
Pieria is one of the most important tourist prefectures in Greece, attracting a great number of visitors and offering a wide range of facilities. More than 70 kilometers of flat coastline with wide, sandy, clean beaches and providing a major tourist infrastructure (7.000 rooms in hotels, 6.000 rooms/studios to let and 35 camping sites, other forms of accommodation and entertainment, travel agencies).
Mount Olympus, famous throughout the world, and the legendary mountains of Pieria with their gentle forests and harmonious beauty.
An important number of traditional settlements, such as Paleos Paneleimon, Paleoi Poroi, Palea Scotina, Scoteina (Morna), Litochoro, Agios Dimitrios, Kolindros, etc.
Many archaeological sites such as Dion, Ancient Pydna, the Prehistoric Settlement of Makrigialos, as well as many Byzantine and post Byzantine monuments, etc.
The comparative advantages of the Prefecture of Pieria which constitute the fundamental reasons for the development in the field of tourism are:
- its geographical features that make it the main gateway to the sea for the inhabitants of Central and West Macedonia and Thessalia, and from abroad for those who live in the Southern areas of The Former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and other countries such as Hungary, Czech, Slovakia, Poland, etc,
- its unobstructed access to the sea and the neighboring mountainous regions, thanks to its close proximity to the modern highway: Athens, Larissa, Thessaloniki, the fact that it is within easy rich of the big urban areas of Thessaloniki and Larissa.
Commerce
Trade is one of the most important economic activities of the people of Pieria. In the field of wholesale trade there are mainly enterprises that trade in agricultural goods and raw materials from the forest, animals, textile materials, processed wood and building materials, foodstuffs, drinks and tobacco products, household appliances, machinery, stationery, etc.
Alongside this, in the field of retail trade, enterprises that trade in foodstuffs and drinks, clothing and footwear, books, stationery, newspapers, cigarettes, furniture, household appliances, computers, car equipment, athletic articles, cosmetics, jewellery, etc predominate.
Transportation
Transport constitutes of one of the major parts of the economic activities of the people of the prefecture, since they own one of the largest transport fleets in Greece, which distribute products throughout the interior of the country and the rest of Europe.
Services
The provision of services has developed into one of the most significant activities of the people of the prefecture, particularly in urban areas. A substantial number of people are employed in civil and private services (Prefecture, Municipalities, state enterprises, the state enterprise of electric power, the organization for telecommunication, the postal service, private schools, medical and pharmaceutical services, taxis, banks, etc), car repair workshops, as well as in new forms of services, such as computers and the Internet sector, mobile telecommunication, speedy transport, security offices, Bureaus of Exchange, financial businesses, cleaning shops, fitness centers, as well as gymnasiums, offices for renting cars, mass media, road assistance, etc.
